एकः सत्पुरुषो लोके लक्ष्मणः सह सीतया।
योऽनुगच्छति काकुत्स्थं रामं परिचरन्वने॥
ekaḥ sat-puruṣo loke lakṣmaṇaḥ saha sītayā
yo ’nugacchati kākutsthaṁ rāmaṁ paricaran vane
ekaḥ = there is only one; sat-puruṣaḥ = good man; loke = in the world; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; saha = and; sītayā = Sītā; yaḥ = for He; anugacchati = follows; kākutstham = the descendant of Kakutstha; rāmam = Rāma; paricaran = and menially serves; vane = in the forest.
“There is only one good man in the world—Lakṣmaṇa—for He follows and menially serves Sītā and Rāma, the descendant of Kakutstha, in the forest.1
1 Śrī Lakṣmaṇa, Śrī Bharata and Śrī Śatrughna are actually full-fledged, loving servitors of Śrī Rāmacandra though They are direct Viṣṇu expansions of Rāmacandra. As such, all of Them are the eternal masters of the living entities, but They have the attitude of being servants of Śrī Rāma and exhibit the characters of ideal Vaiṣṇavas. By stating that Lakṣmaṇa is the only good man in the world, it is indicated in the Rāmāyaṇa that the common exhortion “Be a man” will turn out to mean “Follow in the footsteps of Śrī Lakṣmaṇa, give up everything else—even material duties—and engage in full-fledged devotional service to Sītā-devī and Lord Rāma.” In the modern world, that has been made easy through the clear instructions of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī as presented in his Upadeśāmṛta and Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, which Prabhupāda has presented in the form of The Nectar of Instruction and The Nectar of Devotion respectively. We recommend all to read, study, understand and obey these instructions to attain the highest perfection of spiritual realization.
