Text 2.48.9

आपगाः कृतपुण्यास्ताः पद्मिन्यश्च सरांसि च।

āpagāḥ kṛta-puṇyās tāḥ padminyaś ca sarāṁsi ca
yeṣu snāsyati kākutstho vigāhya salilaṁ śuci

āpagāḥ = rivers; kṛta-puṇyāḥ = have performed great piety; tāḥ = the; padminyaḥ ca = lotus ponds; sarāṁsi = lakes [in the forest where Rāma goes]; ca = and; yeṣu = in them; snāsyati = will bathe; kākutsthaḥ = for the descendant of Kakutstha; vigāhya = by immersing Himself; salilam = waters; śuci = in their pure.

“The rivers, lotus ponds and lakes [in the forest where Rāma goes] have performed great piety, for the descendant of Kakutstha will bathe in them by immersing Himself in their pure waters.

GLOSS. Āpagāḥ and padminyaḥ indicate that the rivers were filled with snakes.1

1 It appears that these snakes were harmless water snakes. Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa notes: “padmaṁ syāt pannage” iti viśvaḥ.
