प्रशान्तगीतोत्सवनृत्तवादना व्यपास्तहर्षा पिहितापणोदया।
तदा ह्ययोध्या नगरी बभूव सा महार्णवः सङ्क्षपितोदको यथा॥
praśānta-gītotsava-nṛtta-vādanā
vyapāsta-harṣā pihitāpaṇodayā
tadā hy ayodhyā nagarī babhūva sā
mahārṇavaḥ saṅkṣapitodako yathā
praśānta-gīta-utsava-nṛtta-vādanā = singing, festivities, dancing and public speeches ceased in the city; vyapāsta-harṣā = delight abandoned the city; pihitā-āpaṇa-udayā = its commercial growth stopped; tadā hi = at that time; ayodhyā = of Ayodhyā; nagarī = city; babhūva = was; sā = the; mahā-arṇavaḥ = the great ocean; saṅkṣapita-udakaḥ = whose water had decreased at the time of dissolution; yathā = like.
Singing, festivities, dancing and public speeches ceased in the city. Delight abandoned the city. Its commercial growth stopped. At that time the city of Ayodhyā was like the great ocean whose water had decreased at the time of dissolution.
