Chapter 50: The Meeting of Rāma and Guha
Text 2.50.50
गुहोऽपि सह सूतेन सौमित्रिमनुभाषयन्।
अन्वजाग्रत्ततो राममप्रमत्तो धनुर्धरः॥
guho ’pi saha sūtena saumitrim anubhāṣayan
anvajāgrat tato rāmam apramatto dhanurdharaḥ
guhaḥ api = Guha; saha = with; sūtena = the charioteer; saumitrim = Lakṣmaṇa; anubhāṣayan = had continuously speak and; anvajāgrat = kept Him awake; tataḥ = then; rāmam = for the sake of Rāma; apramattaḥ = attentively; dhanurdharaḥ = holding his bow.
Attentively holding his bow, Guha then had Lakṣmaṇa continuously speak with the charioteer and kept them awake for the sake of Rāma.
1 This is out of Guha’s excessive affection for Rāma.
Guha induced Sumitrā’s son to speak about Rāma’s transcendental qualities. He kept Lakṣmaṇa awake for the sake of Rāma, that is, to protect Rāma. Dhanurdharaḥ indicates that Guha had his bow because He was doubtful about Lakṣmaṇa’s [ability to protect Rāma].1
