तथा शयानस्य ततोऽस्य धीमतो यशस्विनो दाशरथेर्महात्मनः।
अदृष्टदुःखस्य सुखोचितस्य सा तदा व्यतीयाय चिरेण शर्वरी॥
tathā śayānasya tato ’sya dhīmato
yaśasvino dāśarather mahātmanaḥ
adṛṣṭa-duḥkhasya sukhocitasya sā
tadā vyatīyāya cireṇa śarvarī
tathā = thus; śayānasya = had laid down on the ground [to sleep]; tataḥ = then; asya = He; dhīmataḥ = was intelligent; yaśasvinaḥ = famous; dāśaratheḥ = the son of Daśaratha; mahā-ātmanaḥ = and a great soul; adṛṣṭa-duḥkhasya = He had never experienced [personal] distress; sukha-ucitasya = and was used to comfort; sā = the; tadā vyatīyāya = passed; cireṇa = slowly for Him; śarvarī = night.
The son of Daśaratha had thus laid down on the ground [to sleep]. He was intelligent, famous and a great soul. He had never experienced [personal] distress and was used to comfort. The night then passed slowly for Him.
