Chapter 51: Guha and Lakṣmaṇa Converse at Night
Text 2.51.16
अनुरक्तजनाकीर्णा सुखा लोकप्रियावहा।
राजव्यसनसंसृष्टा सा पुरी विनशिष्यति॥
anurakta-janākīrṇā sukhā loka-priyāvahā
rāja-vyasana-saṁsṛṣṭā sā purī vinaśiṣyati
anurakta-jana-ākīrṇā = was [formerly] crowded by affectionate people; sukhā = it was the [natural] cause of great happiness; loka-priya-āvahā = [and so] it made the people happy; rāja-vyasana-saṁsṛṣṭā = [now] there is a calamity in the city that will lead to the king’s death; sā = the; purī = city; vinaśiṣyati = the city will perish.
“The city was [formerly] crowded by affectionate people. It was the [natural] cause of great happiness [and so] it made the people happy. [Now] there is a calamity in the city that will lead to the king’s death. The city will perish.
