Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.14
निवर्तस्वेत्युवाचैनमेतावद्धि कृतं मम।
रथं विहाय पद्भ्यां तु गमिष्यामो महावनम्॥
nivartasvety uvācainam etāvad dhi kṛtaṁ mama
rathaṁ vihāya padbhyāṁ tu gamiṣyāmo mahā-vanam
nivartasva iti = return; uvāca = He told; enam = Sumantra; etāvat = this far; hi = since; kṛtam mama = you have brought Me; ratham = the chariot; vihāya = without; padbhyām tu = on foot; gamiṣyāmaḥ = we will proceed; mahā-vanam = to the great forest.
He told Sumantra: “Return. Since you brought Me this far, from now on, we will proceed without the chariot to the great forest on foot.”1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: mama etāvat kṛtaṁ hi gaṅgā-tīra-paryantaṁ rathena prāpaṇam kṛtaṁ hi.
Sumantra brought Rāma on chariot to the bank of Gaṅgā on the order of King Daśaratha.
