Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.15
आत्मानं त्वभ्यनुज्ञातमवेक्ष्यार्तः स सारथिः।
सुमन्त्रः पुरुषव्याघ्रमैक्ष्वाकमिदमब्रवीत्॥
ātmānaṁ tv abhyanujñātam avekṣyārtaḥ sa sārathiḥ
sumantraḥ puruṣa-vyāghram aikṣvākam idam abravīt
ātmānam tu = he; abhyanujñātam = was now permitted [to return to Ayodhyā]; avekṣya = understanding that; ārtaḥ = distressed; saḥ = the; sārathiḥ = charioteer; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; puruṣa-vyāghram = to the prince; aikṣvākam = who descended from Ikṣvāku; idam = the following; abravīt = spoke.
Understanding that he was now permitted [to return to Ayodhyā], the distressed charioteer Sumantra spoke the following to the prince who descended from Ikṣvāku.
Sumantra was distressed that he was not permitted to follow [Rāma to the forest].
