Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.24
यद्यदाज्ञापयेत्किञ्चित्स महात्मा महीपतिः।
कैकेय्याः प्रियकामार्थं कार्यं तदविकाङ्क्षया॥
yad yad ājñāpayet kiñcit sa mahātmā mahī-patiḥ
kaikeyyāḥ priya-kāmārthaṁ kāryaṁ tad avikāṅkṣayā
yat yat = whatever; ājñāpayet = orders; kiñcit1 saḥ = the; mahā-ātmā = great soul; mahī-patiḥ = King Daśaratha; kaikeyyāḥ = of Queen Kaikeyī; priya-kāma-artham = to fulfill the cherished desires; kāryam tat = do; avikāṅkṣayā = respectfully.
Respectfully do whatever the great-soul King Daśaratha orders to fulfill the cherished desires of Queen Kaikeyī.1
Rāma speaks this verse to point out that authorities and masters should not be restrained and that they should, on the other hand, be obeyed in every manner.
