Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.47
मम तावन्नियोगस्थास्त्वद्बन्धुजनवाहिनः।
कथं रथं त्वया हीनं प्रवक्ष्यन्ति हयोत्तमाः॥
mama tāvan niyogasthās tvad-bandhu-janavāhinaḥ
kathaṁ rathaṁ tvayā hīnaṁ pravakṣyanti hayottamāḥ
mama tāvat = under my; niyogasthāḥ = command; tvat-bandhu-janavāhinaḥ = and who carry Your relatives; katham = how; ratham = this chariot; tvayā = You; hīnam = without; pravakṣyanti1 = can carry; haya-uttamāḥ = these fine horses.
How can these fine horses under my command and who carry Your relatives carry this chariot without You?
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vaher lṛṭi rūpam.
“Your relatives” refers to members of Rāma’s dynasty as well as Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa.
