Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.50
भविष्यन्ति वने यानि तपोविघ्नकराणि ते।
रथेन प्रतिवाधिष्ये तानि सत्त्वानि राघव॥
bhaviṣyanti vane yāni tapo-vighnakarāṇi te
rathena pratibādhiṣye tāni sattvāni rāghava
bhaviṣyanti = might; vane = in the forest; yāni = that; tapaḥ-vighnakarāṇi = present obstacles to austerities; te = Your; rathena = using the chariot; pratibādhiṣye = I will obstruct; tāni sattvāni = those creatures; rāghava = Rāghava.
Rāghava, using the chariot, I will obstruct those creatures in the forest that might present obstacles to Your austerities.1
1 Sumantra offers this as one of his services to Rāma while he accompanies Him in the forest for fourteen years.
In some manuscripts, sarvāṇi appears in the place of sattvāni. The meaning of the verse remains the same.
