भृत्यवत्सल तिष्ठन्तं भर्तृपुत्रगते पथि।
भक्तं भृत्यं स्थितं स्थित्यां त्वं न मां हातुमर्हसि॥
bhṛtya-vatsala tiṣṭhantaṁ bhartṛ-putra-gate pathi
bhaktaṁ bhṛtyaṁ sthitaṁ sthityāṁ tvaṁ na māṁ hātum arhasi
bhṛtya-vatsala = You are affectionate to Your servants; tiṣṭhantam = and I am waiting to go to the forest; bhartṛ-putra-gate = taken by You, my master’s son; pathi = by the path; bhaktam = I am Your devotee; bhṛtyam = and servant; sthitam = therefore I am situated; sthityām = within my boundaries of behavior; tvam = You; na = not; mām = me; hātum = abandon; arhasi = should.
You are affectionate to Your servants. I am Your devotee and servant. Therefore I am situated within my boundaries of behavior and I am waiting to go to the forest by the path taken by You, my master’s son. You should not abandon me
Sthitaṁ sthityām indicates that Sumantra was situated within his boundaries of behavior, that is, he never transgressed his boundaries. He had decided to follow Lord Rāma to the forest.
