Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.76

स भ्रातुः शासनं श्रुत्वा सर्वमप्रतिकूलयन्।
आरोप्य मैथिलीं पूर्वमारुरोहात्मवांस्ततः॥

sa bhrātuḥ śāsanaṁ śrutvā sarvam apratikūlayan
āropya maithilīṁ pūrvam ārurohātmavāṁs tataḥ

saḥ = the; bhrātuḥ = of His brother; śāsanam = the instruction; śrutvā = after hearing; sarvam = in its entirety; apratikūlayan = without becoming unfavorable to it; āropya = had get on the boat; maithilīm = Maithilī; pūrvam = first; āruroha = climbed on it; ātmavān = intelligent Lakṣmaṇa; tataḥ = and then.

After hearing the instruction of His brother in its entirety, without becoming unfavorable to it, the intelligent Lakṣmaṇa first had Maithilī get on the boat and then climbed on it.

Apratikūlayan (“without becoming unfavorable to it”) indicates that Lakṣmaṇa carried out Rāma’s instruction somehow or other. Ātmavān (“intelligent”) indicates that Lakṣmaṇa was aware of Rāma’s intent. By referring to Sītā-devī as manasvinīm (“virtuous”) and Śrī Lakṣmaṇa as ātmavān (“intelligent”), the author points out that there was not even a slight defect in Lakṣmaṇa or Sītā.
