Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 56: Rāma Reaches Citrakūṭa
Text 2.56.7
पश्य भल्लातकान्फुल्लान्नरैरनुपसेवितान्।
फलपत्रैरवनतान्नूनं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्॥
paśya bhallātakān phullān narair anupasevitān
phala-patrair avanatān nūnaṁ śakṣyāmi jīvitum
paśya = look at; bhallātakān = vīra trees; phullān = with blossomed flowers; naraiḥ = by men; anupasevitān = untouched; phala-patraiḥ = with their fruits and leaves; avanatān = they are bending; nūnam = certainly; śakṣyāmi jīvitum = I can live because of them.
Look at the vīra trees with blossomed flowers untouched by men. They are bending low with their fruits and leaves. I can certainly survive because of them!1
1 “I can certainly survive because of them” means “I can certainly survive with the help of these trees, their fruits and so on.”
Narair upasevitān indicates that men did not take advantage of these trees because of their inaccessibility. These trees provided whatever was needed for living.
