Chapter 57: Sumantra Returns to Ayodhyā
Text 2.57.1

कथयित्वा सुदुःखार्तः सुमत्रेण चिरं सह।
रामे दक्षिणकूलस्थे जगाम स्वगृहं गुहः॥

kathayitvā suduḥkhārtaḥ sumantreṇa ciraṁ saha
rāme dakṣiṇa-kūlasthe jagāma sva-gṛhaṁ guhaḥ

kathayitvā = having spoken; suduḥkha-ārtaḥ = who was anguished in extreme sorrow; sumantreṇa = Sumantra; ciram = for a long time; saha = with; rāme = after Rāma; dakṣiṇa-kūlasthe = reached the southern bank [of Gaṅgā]; jagāma = went; sva-gṛham = to his home with him; guhaḥ = Guha.

Having spoken with Sumantra for a long time, Guha who was anguished in extreme sorrow went to his home with him after Rāma reached the southern bank [of Gaṅgā].

Sage Vālmīki has so far described Rāma’s activities until His departure to Citrakūṭa. Now he begins to describe the activities of Guha, Sumantra and so on.

When Rāma had reached the southern bank [of Gaṅgā], anguished in extreme distress, Guha spoke to Sumantra for a long time, that is, as long as Rāma was visible to his eyes, about Rāma’s auspicious qualities.
