Chapter 57: Sumantra Returns to Ayodhyā
Text 2.57.3
अनुज्ञातः सुमन्त्रोऽथ योजयित्वा हयोत्तमान्।
अयोध्यामेव नगरीं प्रययौ गाढदुर्मनाः॥
anujñātaḥ sumantro ’tha yojayitvā hayottamān
ayodhyām eva nagarīṁ prayayau gāḍha-durmanāḥ
anujñātaḥ = was permitted [to leave]; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; atha = after hearing about Rāma; yojayitvā = he then yoked; haya-uttamān = his excellent horses; ayodhyām = of Ayodhyā; eva nagarīm = straight to the city; prayayau = departed; gāḍha-durmanāḥ = and in extreme dejection.
After hearing about Rāma, Sumantra was permitted [to leave]. He then yoked his excellent horses and in extreme dejection departed straight to the city of Ayodhyā.
