Chapter 57: Sumantra Returns to Ayodhyā
Text 2.57.11
ते तीर्णा इति विज्ञाय बाष्पपूर्णमुखा जनाः।
अहो धिगिति निश्वस्य हा रामेति च चुक्रुशुः॥
te tīrṇā iti vijñāya bāṣpa-pūrṇa-mukhā janāḥ
aho dhig iti niśvasya hā rāmeti ca cukruśuḥ
te = Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī; tīrṇāḥ iti = had crossed over [Gaṅgā]; vijñāya = upon understanding that; bāṣpa-pūrṇa-mukhāḥ janāḥ = the people’s faces filled with tears; aho = alas; dhik iti = fie on [us]; niśvasya = they sighed; hā = oh; rāma iti = Rāma; ca = and; cukruśuḥ = cried.
Upon understanding that Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī had crossed over [Gaṅgā], the people’s faces filled with tears. They sighed and cried, “Alas, fie on [us who have been separated from Rāma]!1 Oh ,Rāma!”
