Chapter 58: Sumantra Conveys the Message of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.58.19
अभिमानं च मानं च त्यक्त्वा वर्तस्व मातृषु।
अनु राजानमार्यां च कैकेयीमम्ब कारय॥
abhimānaṁ ca mānaṁ ca tyaktvā vartasva mātṛṣu
anu rājānam āryāṁ ca kaikeyīm amba kāraya
abhimānam ca = conceit; mānam = haughtiness; ca = and; tyaktvā = giving up; vartasva = serve; mātṛṣu = [My other] mothers; anu = the way you treat 1; rājānam = the king; āryām = the noble; ca = and; kaikeyīm = Kaikeyī; amba = mother; kāraya = treat.
Mother, giving up conceit and haughtiness, and serve [My other] mothers. Treat the noble Kaikeyī the way you treat the king.
Abhimānam (“conceit”) indicates that Lord Rāma wanted His mother Kausalyā to give up her conceit of [having taken birth in] a noble family. Mānam (“haughtiness”) indicates that He did not want her to be haughty because of her being the seniormost wife [of King Daśaratha].
