Chapter 58: Sumantra Conveys the Message of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.58.34
जानकी तु महाराज निश्वसन्ती मनस्विनी।
भूतोपहतचित्तेव विष्ठिता विस्मिता स्थिता॥
jānakī tu mahā-rāja niśvasantī manasvinī
bhūtopahata-citteva viṣṭhitā vismitā sthitā
jānakī = Jānakī; tu = on the other hand; mahā-rāja = Mahārāja; niśvasantī = sighing; manasvinī = with gravity in thought; bhūta-upahata-citta = a woman whose mind is overcome by a ghost; iva = like; viṣṭhitā = stunned; vismitā = as if in astonishment; sthitā = stood.
Mahārāja, Jānakī, on the other hand, sighing with gravity in thought, stood stunned as if in astonishment, like a woman whose mind is overcome by a ghost.
Lakṣmaṇa noticed Rāma’s lamentation and so spoke what was on His own mind, but Sītā-devī didn’t do that. Sumantra addresses Daśaratha as Mahārāja to indicate that he should not become disturbed in heart by hearing about Sītā-devī’s distress. She sighed in distress due to excessive distress in her heart. She stood as if in astonishment, that is, with her eyes wide open as if in astonishment.
