Chapter 59: Sumantra Describes the Agony of all Creatures in the Country

विषये ते महाराज रामव्यसनकर्शिताः।
अपि वृक्षाः परिम्लानाः सपुष्पाङ्करकोरकाः॥
viṣaye te mahā-rāja rāma-vyasana-karśitāḥ
api vṛkṣāḥ parimlānāḥ sapuṣpāṅkura-korakāḥ
viṣaye = in kingdom 1; te = your; mahā-rāja = Mahārāja; rāma-vyasana-karśitāḥ = emaciated due to Rāma’s calamity; api = even; vṛkṣāḥ = trees; parimlānāḥ = have withered away; sapuṣpa-aṅkura-korakāḥ = along with their flowers, sprouts and buds 2.
Mahārāja, emaciated due to Rāma’s calamity, even trees along with their flowers, sprouts and buds have withered away in your kingdom!
The author now describes that everyone was distressed in separation from Rāma to point out that Rāma is the inner controller and soul of all souls. [Daśaratha’s] thoughtless and sudden act [of banishing Rāma] to please Kaikeyī disturbed everyone.
“Even” indicates that creepers and so on are included here among the trees. To point out that the trees did not partially decay because of disease and so on, the author mentions “along with their flowers, sprouts and buds.” The flowers here refer to those that have newly blossomed.
Entire trees became withered at the same time.
