अविज्ञाय फलं यो हि कर्म त्वेवानुधावति।
स शोचेत्फलवेलायां यथा किंशुकसेचकः॥
avijñāya phalaṁ yo hi karma tv evānudhāvati
sa śocet phala-velāyāṁ yathā kiṁśuka-secakaḥ
avijñāya = without considering; phalam = the future violent result [of engaging in that activity]; yaḥ hi = who; karma tu eva = into an activity; anudhāvati = freely rushes; saḥ = he; śocet = will lament; phala-velāyām = when that activity fructifies; yathā = like; kiṁśuka-secakaḥ = the nourisher of the kiṁśuka tree.
He who freely rushes into an activity without considering the future violent result [of engaging in that activity] will lament when that activity fructifies like the nourisher of the kiṁśuka tree.1
1 By the arrangement of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, every activity we engage in this world produces a reaction in the form of happiness or unhappiness that are usually experienced in a future lifetime. But there are cases of extreme piety or impiety whose results are experienced in this very lifetime as noted in the commentary to text 2.62.3. All this is well-regulated by the laws of nature under the supervision of the Supreme Lord who does not whimsically cause anyone’s material happiness or unhappiness. We alone are ultimately responsible for our miseries. This will be hinted at in the next verse.
