Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.30
जटाभारधरस्यैव वल्कलाजिनवाससः।
को वधेन ममार्थी स्यात्किं वास्यापकृतं मया॥
jaṭā-bhāradharasyaiva valkalājina-vāsasaḥ
ko vadhena mamārthī syāt kiṁ vāsyāpakṛtaṁ mayā
jaṭā-bhāradharasya eva = I have matted my hair; valkala-ajina-vāsasaḥ = and I wear cloth from bark; kaḥ = who; vadhena = to kill; mama = me; arthī = would need; syāt = have done; kim vā = what; asya = to him; apakṛtam = wrong; mayā = I.
“Who would need to kill me? What wrong have I done to him? I have matted my hair and I wear cloth from bark.1
1 The first line of this verse indicates that would be no use for whoever has tried to kill him because he does not have any wealth to gain.
