तस्यायं कर्मणो देवि विपाकः समुपस्थितः।
अपथ्यैः सह संभुक्तो व्याधिमन्नरसो यथा॥
tasyāyaṁ karmaṇo devi vipākaḥ samupasthitaḥ
apathyaiḥ saha sambhukto vyādhim anna-raso yathā
tasya = of that; ayam = the; karmaṇaḥ = activity; devi = O queen; vipākaḥ = result; samupasthitaḥ = has arrived [for me to experience]; apathyaiḥ saha = with unhealthy vegetables; sambhuktaḥ = when consumed; vyādhim = to disease; anna-rasaḥ = rice and liquids lead; yathā = just as.
O queen, the result of that activity has arrived [for me to experience], just as rice and liquids lead to disease when consumed with unhealthy vegetables.1
1 Daśaratha in his youth had unknowingly committed a grievous sinful activity. But even when sins are committed unknowingly, they do lead to misery just as even if one unknowingly consumes rice and liquids with unhealthy vegetables his health will worsen.
When rice and liquids are taken along with unhealthy vegetables, that is, vegetables that increase disease, then the rice and liquids increase the disease. [Similarly the result of Daśaratha’s previous sinful activities] had arrived now as obstacles [to his happiness].
Some manuscripts contain the reading apathyaiḥ saha sambhukte vyādhir anna-rase yathā as the second line. [The meaning is the same.]
