Chapter 66: Daśaratha’s Ministers Preserve his Body
Text 2.66.29
नराश्च नार्यश्च समेत्य सङ्घशो विगर्हमाणा भरतस्य मातरम्।
तदा नगर्यां नरदेवसंक्षये बभूवुरार्ता न च शर्म लेभिरे॥
narāś ca nāryaś ca sametya saṅghaśo
vigarhamāṇā bharatasya mātaram
tadā nagaryāṁ naradeva-saṅkṣaye
babhūvur ārtā na ca śarma lebhire
narāḥ ca = men; nāryaḥ ca = and women; sametya = congregated; saṅghaśaḥ = in groups; vigarhamāṇāḥ = they criticized; bharatasya = Bharata’s; mātaram = mother; tadā = at that time; nagaryām = in the city; naradeva-saṅkṣaye = at the death of the king; babhūvuḥ = and became; ārtāḥ = pained; na ca śarma lebhire = they became unhappy.
At that time men and women in the city congregated in groups. They criticized Bharata’s mother and became pained at the death of the king. They were unhappy.
