नाराजके धनं चास्ति नास्ति भार्याप्यराजके।

nārājake dhanaṁ cāsti nāsti bhāryāpy arājake
idam atyāhitaṁ cānyat kutaḥ satyam arājake
na = no; arājake = in the absence of a bona fide king; dhanam ca = wealth; asti = there is; na = no; asti = there is; bhāryā api = wife; arājake = in the absence of a bona fide king; idam = there is yet; atyāhitam ca = danger 1; anyat = another; kutaḥ satyam = where is there any honesty in commercial transactions; arājake = in the absence of a bona fide king.
In the absence of a bona fide king, there is no wealth. In the absence of a bona fide king, there is no wife. In the absence of a bona fide king, there is yet another danger—where is there any honesty in commercial transactions?
1 Life with an unchaste wife cannot be equated with life with a chaste wife. Therefore the above statement.
“There is no wealth” because of the dangers posed by thieves.
GLOSS. It is implied that “there is no wife” because of the disturbance caused by debauchees and so on.1
