Chapter 67: The Sages Request Vasiṣṭha to Coronate a son of Daśaratha

नाराजके जनपदे कारयन्ति सभां नराः।
उद्यानानि च रम्याणि हृष्टाः पुण्यगृहाणि च॥
nārājake janapade kārayanti sabhāṁ narāḥ
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi hṛṣṭāḥ puṇya-gṛhāṇi ca
na = would not; arājake = where there is no bona fide king; janapade = in a place where; kārayanti = construct; sabhām = assembly halls for discussing and clarifying scriptural knowledge; narāḥ = men; udyānāni ca = gardens; ramyāṇi = pleasant; hṛṣṭāḥ = they would not happily create; puṇya-gṛhāṇi = religious places of worship; ca = and.
In a place where there is no bona fide king, men would not construct assembly halls for discussing and clarifying scriptural knowledge, they would not happily create pleasant gardens and religious places of worship.
They would not construct [such] assembly halls because they would not be mentally healthy. They would not create gardens out of fear that these gardens would be cut off. They would not construct religious places of worship such as temples out of fear that they would be turned into forts.
