Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 67: The Sages Request Vasiṣṭha to Coronate a son of Daśaratha
Text 2.67.23

नाराजके जनपदे चरत्येकचरो वशी।
भावयन्नात्मनात्मानं यत्र सायङ्गृहो मुनिः॥

nārājake janapade caraty eka-caro vaśī
bhāvayann ātmanātmānaṁ yatra sāyaṅ-gṛho muniḥ

na = will not; arājake = without a bona fide king; janapade = in a land; carati = wander about; eka-caraḥ = who has no assistants; vaśī = a sense-controlled; bhāvayan = who thinks; ātmanā = in his mind; ātmānam = of the Supreme Lord; yatra sāyam-gṛhaḥ = and who resides in a place only at night; muniḥ = sage.

In a land without a bona fide king, a sense-controlled sage, who has no assistants, who thinks of the Supreme Lord in his mind and who resides in a place only at night, will not wander about.1

He will not wander about because there would be nobody to give him food.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: yatra sāyaṅ-gṛhaḥ yasmin pradeśe sāyaṅ-kālo bhavati tatra gṛhaṁ nivāso yasya tathā san.
