Chapter 69: Bharata’s Distressing Dreams
Text 2.69.1
यामेव रात्रिं ते दूताः प्रविशन्ति स्म तां पुरीम्।
भरतेनापि तां रात्रिं स्वप्नो दृष्टोऽयमप्रियः॥
yām eva rātriṁ te dūtāḥ praviśanti sma tāṁ purīm
bharatenāpi tāṁ rātriṁ svapno dṛṣṭo ’yam apriyaḥ
yām eva rātrim = very night when; te dūtāḥ = the messengers; praviśanti sma = entered; tām purīm = the city; bharatena api = Bharata; tām rātrim = on that; svapnaḥ = dream; dṛṣṭaḥ = saw; ayam apriyaḥ = an unpleasant.
Bharata saw an unpleasant dream on that very night when the messengers entered the city.
1 As we learn from the Third Chapter of the Vedānta sutra with its commentaries, certain events perceived in a dream indicates auspiciousness or inauspiciousness in one’s wakeful existence.
This has been stated [by the author] to point out that a dream in the early morning will produce results immediately.1
