Chapter 69: Bharata’s Distressing Dreams
Text 2.69.2
व्युष्टामेव तु तां रात्रिं दृष्ट्वा तं स्वप्नमप्रियम्।
पुत्रो राजाधिराजस्य सुभृशं पर्यतप्यत॥
vyuṣṭām eva tu tāṁ rātriṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ svapnam apriyam
putro rājādhirājasya subhṛśaṁ paryatapyata
vyuṣṭām eva tu = had just ended; tām rātrim = the night; dṛṣṭvā = upon noticing that; tam svapnam = about the dream; apriyam = unpleasant; putraḥ = son; rāja-adhirājasya = the emperor’s; subhṛśam = extremely; paryatapyata = became disturbed.
Upon noticing that the night had just ended, the emperor’s son became extremely disturbed about the unpleasant dream.
1 As we learn from the Third Chapter of the Vedānta sutra with its commentaries, certain events perceived in a dream indicates auspiciousness or inauspiciousness in one’s wakeful existence.
This has been stated [by the author] to point out that a dream in the early morning will produce results immediately.1
