अद्य मे सप्तमी रात्रिश्च्युतस्यार्यकवेश्मनः।
अम्बायाः कुशली तातो युधाजिन्मातुलश्च मे॥
adya me saptamī rātriś cyutasyāryaka-veśmanaḥ
ambāyāḥ kuśalī tāto yudhājin mātulaś ca me
adya me = since I; saptamī = was the seventh; rātriḥ = the previous night; cyutasya = left; āryaka-veśmanaḥ = the residence of My noble maternal grandfather; ambāyāḥ = My mother’s; kuśalī = well; tātaḥ = father is; yudhājit = Yudhājit; mātulaḥ = maternal uncle; ca = and so is; me = My.
The previous night was the seventh since I left the residence of My noble maternal grandfather. My mother’s father is well and so is My maternal uncle Yudhājit.1
1 Why “My mother’s father”? Because Bharata has three hundred and fifty mothers and He is talking about the father of His own mother Kaikeyī here.
Adya (literally “today”) along with rātriḥ (“the night”) means “the previous night.” Thus there is no conflict with this text:
tāṁ purīṁ puruṣa-vyāghraḥ sapta-rātroṣitaḥ pathi
ayodhyām agrato dṛṣṭvā sārathiṁ vākyam abravīt
“Prince Bharata had stayed awake for seven nights on the way. He now saw the city of Ayodhyā ahead of Him and spoke the [following] words to His charioteer.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.71.19)
