Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.22-23

तमार्तं देवसंकाशं समीक्ष्य पतितं भुवि।
निकृत्तमिव सालस्य स्कन्धं परशुना वने॥

मत्तमातङ्गसंकाशं चन्द्रार्कसदृशं भुवः।
उत्थापयित्वा शोकार्तं वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्॥

tam ārtaṁ deva-saṅkāśaṁ samīkṣya patitaṁ bhuvi
nikṛttam iva sālasya skandhaṁ paraśunā vane

matta-mātaṅga-saṅkāśaṁ candrārka-sadṛśaṁ bhuvaḥ
utthāpayitvā śokārtaṁ vacanaṁ cedam abravīt

tam = Him; ārtam = distressed; deva-saṅkāśam = like a deva; samīkṣya = Kaikeyī saw; patitam = fallen; bhuvi = on earth; nikṛttam = that had been cut down; iva = He resembled; sālasya = of the Sāla tree; skandham = a branch; paraśunā = by an axe; vane = in the forest; matta-mātaṅga-saṅkāśam = He resembled an intoxicated elephant; candra-arka-sadṛśam = and was like the moon and the sun; bhuvaḥ = on earth; utthāpayitvā = raised Him up; śoka-ārtam = Bharata was pained in sorrow; vacanam = words; ca = and; idam = the following; abravīt = spoke.

Bharata was pained in sorrow like a distressed deva fallen on earth. He resembled a branch of the Sāla tree in the forest that had been cut down by an axe. He resembled an intoxicated elephant and was like the moon and the sun on earth. Kaikeyī saw Him, raised Him up and spoke the following words.

GLOSS. Bharata resembled an intoxicated elephant because He [fell on the ground and thus] threw dust [around Him]. He was [pleasing] like the moon to those who took the side of Rāma and burning like the sun to others.
