Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.46
अथास्य चपला माता तत्स्वकर्म यथातथम्।
तेनैव स्त्रीस्वभावेन व्याहर्तुमुपचक्रमे॥
athāsya capalā mātā tat sva-karma yathā-tatham
tenaiva strī-svabhāvena vyāhartum upacakrame
atha = then; asya = Bharata’s; capalā = fickle; mātā = mother; tat sva-karma = about her endeavors; yathā-tatham = the [full] truth; tena eva strī-svabhāvena = impelled by the nature of a woman; vyāhartum = to speak; upacakrame = decided.
Then, impelled by the nature of a woman, Bharata’s fickle mother decided to speak the [full] truth about her endeavors.
Some [authorities] say that this verse was the sage Vālmīki’s sorrowful observation.
