भ्रूणहत्यामसि प्राप्ता कुलस्यास्य विनाशनात्।
कैकेयि नरकं गच्छ मा च भर्तुः सलोकताम्॥
bhrūṇa-hatyām asi prāptā kulasyāsya vināśanāt
kaikeyī narakaṁ gaccha mā ca bhartuḥ salokatām
bhrūṇa-hatyām = the sinful reaction of killing a faithful graduate of Vedic studies; asi prāptā = you have attained; kulasya = dynasty; asya = this; vināśanāt = by destroying; kaikeyī = Queen Kaikeyī; narakam = to hell; gaccha = go; mā ca = not; bhartuḥ = by your husband; salokatām = to the destination attained.
1 See the comment to text 2.72.45 regarding the meaning of bhrūṇa as “a faithful graduate of Vedic studies.” Bhrūṇa more commonly refers to a child in the womb: bhrūṇaḥ strī-garbha-ḍimbhayoḥ (Medinī). And the killer of a bhrūṇa refers to one who murders the child in the womb. So the first line of this Rāmāyaṇa verse can mean, “By destroying this dynasty, you have attained the sinful reaction of one who has committed abortion.” And the result of committing abortion is nothing but hell—bhrūṇahā pura-hantā ca goghnaś ca muni-sattama / yānti te narakaṁ rodhaṁ yaś cocchvāsa-nirodhakaḥ: “O best of sages, the murderer of the child in the womb, the destroyer of a city, the killer of cows and one strangles another will go to the hell [named] Rodhaka.” (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 2.6.8)
