त्वत्कृते मे पिता वृत्तो रामश्चारण्यमाश्रितः।
अयशो जीवलोके च त्वयाहं प्रतिपादितः॥
tvat-kṛte me pitā vṛtto rāmaś cāraṇyam āśritaḥ
ayaśo jīva-loke ca tvayāhaṁ pratipāditaḥ
tvat-kṛte = because of you; me = My; pitā = father; vṛttaḥ = has departed [to the heavens]; rāmaḥ = Rāma; ca = and; araṇyam = of a forest; āśritaḥ = has taken shelter; ayaśaḥ = infamy; jīva-loke = in the world of living beings; ca = and; tvayā = because of you; aham = I; pratipāditaḥ = have attained.
Because of you My father has departed [to the heavens] and Rāma has taken shelter of a forest. Because of you I have attained infamy in the world of living beings.
1 Note Bharata’s high sensitivity to the difficulties of everyone in the kingdom. He says that He has become infamous in the world of living beings to indicate that all living beings will now despise Him for having caused Rāma to be exiled and Daśaratha to die.
Because of Kaikeyī, Bharata attained infamy as the person who used His mother to banish His eldest brother and thus destroy the king.1
