Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.1

dīrgha-kālāt samutthāya saṁjñāṁ labdhvā ca vīryavān
netrābhyām aśru-pūrṇābhyāṁ dīnām udvīkṣya mātaram
so ’mātya-madhye bharato jananīm abhyakutsayat

dīrgha-kālāt = after a long time; samutthāya = got up; saṁjñām labdhvā ca = became conscious and; vīryavān = powerful one; netrābhyām = with eyes; aśru-pūrṇābhyām = filled with tears; dīnām = morose; udvīkṣya = looked up and; mātaram = at His mother; saḥ = that; amātya-madhye = in the presence of the ministers; bharataḥ = Bharata; jananīm = His mother; abhyakutsayat = criticized.

After a long time, Bharata became conscious and got up. With eyes filled with tears, that powerful one looked up at His morose mother and criticized His mother in the presence of the ministers.

Kaikeyī was morose because her ambition was shattered. “In the presence of the ministers” indicates that Sumantra and other ministers had already arrived upon learning that Bharata had arrived. Bharata criticized His mother again to inform the ministers [that she had done something very displeasing to Him].1

1 Bharata wanted to make it clear that He had nothing to do with the schemes of Mantharā and Kaikeyī.
