Chapter 77: Bharata and Śatrughna Lament About Daśaratha’s Departure
Text 2.77.12

उन्मत्त इव निश्चेता विललाप सुदुःखितः।
स्मृत्वा पितुर्गुणाङ्गानि तानितानि तदातदा॥

unmatta iva niścetā vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ
smṛtvā pitur guṇāṅgāni tāni tāni tadā tadā

unmattaḥ = a madman; iva = like; niścetāḥ = He became senseless; vilalāpa = and then lamented; suduḥkhitaḥ = in extreme sorrow [as follows]; smṛtvā = remembering; pituḥ = His father’s; guṇa-aṅgāni = qualities and features; tāni tāni = particular; tadā tadā = at various times.

Remembering His father’s particular qualities and features at various times, He became senseless like a madman and then lamented in extreme distress [as follows].

Bharata remembered His father’s granting Him whatever He had desired as appropriate to the time and his indulging Bharata by giving Him whatever He wanted.

GLOSS. Bharata [also] remembered that His father had been kind to the citizens.
