Chapter 77: Bharata and Śatrughna Lament About Daśaratha’s Departure
Text 2.77.23
त्रीणि द्वन्द्वानि भूतेषु प्रवृत्तान्यविशेषतः।
तेषु चापरिहार्येषु नैवं भवितुमर्हसि॥
trīṇi dvandvāni bhūteṣu pravṛttāny aviśeṣataḥ
teṣu cāparihāryeṣu naivaṁ bhavitum arhasi
trīṇi = three; dvandvāni = pairs [of difficulties]; bhūteṣu = by all creatures; pravṛttāni = are faced; aviśeṣataḥ = without exception; teṣu ca aparihāryeṣu = [for] they are unavoidable [in material existence]; na = not; evam = like this while facing them; bhavitum = become; arhasi = You should.
Three pairs [of difficulties] are faced by all creatures without exception. You should not become like this while facing them, [for] they are unavoidable [in material existence].
The three pairs [of difficulties] are hunger and thirst, lamentation and delusion, and old age and death. “You should not become like this” means “You should not lament like an ignorant man in delusion.”
NOTE. Prabhupāda explains in his purport to Bhagavad-gītā 10.4-5 how one becomes free from delusion:
Freedom from doubt and delusion, can be achieved when one is not hesitant and when he understands the transcendental philosophy. Slowly but surely he becomes free from bewilderment. Nothing should be accepted blindly; everything should be accepted with care and with caution.
