Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 78: Śatrughna Punishes Mantharā
Text 2.78.5

इति संभाषमाणे तु शत्रुघ्ने लक्ष्मणानुजे।
प्राग्द्वारेऽभूत्तदा कुब्जा सर्वाभरणभूषिता॥

iti sambhāṣamāṇe tu śatrughne lakṣmaṇānuje
prāg-dvāre ’bhūt tadā kubjā sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitā

iti sambhāṣamāṇe tu = was speaking thus; śatrughne = Śatrughna; lakṣmaṇa-anuje = while Lakṣmaṇa’s younger brother; prāk-dvāre = by the eastern gate; abhūt tadā = came; kubjā = the hunchback Mantharā; sarva-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitā = adorned with all sorts of ornaments.

While Lakṣmaṇa’s younger brother Śatrughna was speaking thus, the hunchback Mantharā adorned with all sorts of ornaments came by the eastern gate.

The hunchback had been waiting with the thought, “When will Bharata’s coronation that I have wanted take place?” By providence, she came by the eastern gate of the king’s palace [when] Bharata and Śatrughna were there.
