Chapter 79: Bharata Prepares to go With His Army to Meet Rāma
Text 2.79.3
त्वमद्य भव नो राजा राजपुत्र महायशः।
सङ्गत्या नापराध्नोति राज्यमेतदनायकम्॥
tvam adya bhava no rājā rāja-putra mahā-yaśaḥ
saṅgatyā nāparādhnoti rājyam etad anāyakam
tvam = You; adya = now; bhava = [therefore] become; naḥ = our; rājā = king; rāja-putra = O prince; mahā-yaśaḥ = of great reputation; saṅgatyā = because it has come upon You by providence; na aparādhnoti = will not commit an offense by doing so; rājyam = kingdom; etat = this; anāyakam = has no leader [now].
[Therefore] become our king now, O prince of great reputation. Because it has come upon You by providence, You will not commit an offense by doing so. This kingdom has no leader [now].
It has been instructed [by Bhīṣma]:
rājānaṁ prathamaṁ vindet tato bhāryāṁ tato dhanam
rājany asati lokasya kuto bhāryā kuto dhanam
“One should first obtain a king, then a wife and then wealth. In the absence of a king, where is the question of a wife or wealth?” (Mahābhārata 12.57.41)
Therefore, a king is the ultimate protector and hence more important than even a mother, father and so on.
“Because it has come upon You by providence, You will not commit an offense by doing so” indicates that a member of the royalty will not harm another member [of the royalty].
