Chapter 84: Guha Meets Bharata
Text 2.84.4
बन्धयिष्यति वा दाशानथ वास्मान्वधिष्यति।
अथ दाशरथिं रामं पित्रा राज्याद्विवासितम्॥
bandhayiṣyati vā dāśān atha vāsmān vadhiṣyati
atha dāśarathiṁ rāmaṁ pitrā rājyād vivāsitam
bandhayiṣyati = He will arrest; vā = either; dāśān = the fishermen [here]; atha vā = or; asmān = us; vadhiṣyati = kill; atha = and; dāśarathim = Daśaratha’s son; rāmam = Rāma; pitrā = by His father; rājyāt = from His kingdom; vivāsitam = who has been banished.
“He will either arrest the fishermen [here] or kill us and Daśaratha’s son Rāma who has been banished from His kingdom by His father.
1 That is, without an army to fight back. Guha thought like this out of love for Rāma.
[Guha was apprehensive that Bharata] would arrest the fishermen [there], that is, him and his relatives. “Daśaratha’s son” indicates that he considered Rāma to be his relative [too]. Since Rāma had been banished, [Guha thought that] He was weak.1
