Chapter 84: Guha Meets Bharata
Text 2.84.9
यदा तुष्टस्तु भरतो रामस्येह भविष्यति।
सेयं स्वस्तिमती सेना गङ्गामद्य तरिष्यति।।
yadā tuṣṭas tu bharato rāmasyeha bhaviṣyati
seyaṁ svastimatī senā gaṅgām adya tariṣyati
yadā = if; tuṣṭaḥ tu = happy; bharataḥ = Bharata; rāmasya = with Rāma; iha = now; bhaviṣyati = is; sā iyam = this; svastimatī = auspicious; senā = army; gaṅgām = Gaṅgā; adya = today; tariṣyati = can cross over.
“If Bharata is happy with Rāma now, this auspicious army can cross over Gaṅgā today.”
1 If Bharata were not to be submissive to Rāmacandra, Bharata’s army would be inauspicious which Guha wanted to destroy.
In some manuscripts, yadāduṣṭas tu is seen instead of yadā tuṣṭas tu in which case the words should be split as yadā aduṣṭaḥ tu. [The meaning of the verse would be: “If Bharata does not have an evil attitude toward Rāma now, this auspicious army can cross over Gaṅgā today.”]
Svastimatī (“auspicious”) indicates that Guha thought that if this were not to be the case, the army should be destroyed.1
