Chapter 85: Bharata Reveals His Intentions to Guha
Text 2.85.7
कच्चिन्नदुष्टो व्रजसि रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः।
इयं ते महती सेना शङ्कां जनयतीव मे॥
kaccin naduṣṭo vrajasi rāmasyākliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ
iyaṁ te mahatī senā śaṅkāṁ janayatīva me
kaccit = are; naduṣṭaḥ = with a pure intention; vrajasi = You going to meet; rāmasya = Rāma; akliṣṭa-karmaṇaḥ = whose actions don’t harm anyone; iyam = this; te = of Yours; mahatī = great; senā = army; śaṅkām = apprehensive; janayati = make; iva = seems to; me = me.
Are You going to meet Rāma, whose actions don’t harm anyone, with a pure intention? This great army of Yours seems to make me apprehensive.
Kaccit naduṣṭo vrajasi can also be read as kaccit na duṣṭo vrajasi which then means, “Are You not going to meet Rāma with an evil intention?”
The cause for Guha’s apprehension is expressed in the second line of this verse. He implies, “If You were favorable to Rāma, there is no use in bringing Your army along.” Iva (“seems to”) indicates that Guha’s doubt was slight.
