मा भूत्स कालो यत्कष्टं न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि।
राघवः स हि मे भ्राता ज्येष्ठः पितृसमो मतः॥
mā bhūt sa kālo yat kaṣṭaṁ na māṁ śaṅkitum arhasi
rāghavaḥ sa hi me bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛ-samo mataḥ
mā bhūt = may never come about; saḥ kālaḥ = that time; yat kaṣṭam = of difficulty; na = not; mām = Me; śaṅkitum = doubt; arhasi = You should; rāghavaḥ saḥ = Rāghava; hi = because; me = My; bhrātā = brother; jyeṣṭhaḥ = elder; pitṛ-samaḥ = to be equal to My father; mataḥ = I consider.
May that time of difficulty never come about! You should not doubt Me because I consider My elder brother Rāghava to be equal to My father.
1 Since a dhārmika son does not quarrel with a dhārmika father and since Bharata respectfully deals with His elder brother Rāma as if He were His father, there would never come about a situation when Bharata would quarrel with Rāma and so there was need to doubt about Bharata’s submissive devotion to Rāma. This is the point.
“May that never happen at any time” means “May what you have doubted never come to pass!” Since such a situation could [only] happen at a time of quarrel, Guha should not doubt Bharata because He considered Rāma to be equal to His father.1
