Chapter 86: Guha Relates Rāma’s Pastimes on the Bank of Gaṅgā
Text 2.86.16
जीवेदपि च मे माता शत्रुघ्नस्यान्ववेक्षया।
दुःखिता या तु कौसल्या वीरसूर्विनशिष्यति॥
jīved api ca me mātā śatrughnasyānvavekṣayā
duḥkhitā yā tu kausalyā vīrasūr vinaśiṣyati
jīvet api ca = might live; me = My; mātā = mother; śatrughnasya anvavekṣayā = out of consideration for Śatrughna; duḥkhitā = the distressed; yā = that lady; tu = but; kausalyā = Kausalyā; vīrasūḥ = mother of a hero; vinaśiṣyati = will perish.
My mother might live out of consideration for Śatrughna, but that lady—Kausalyā, the distressed mother of a hero—will perish.1
अतिक्रान्तमतिक्रान्तमनवाप्य मनोरथम्।
राज्ये राममनिक्षिप्य पिता मे विनशिष्यति॥
1 Out of humility, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa refers to Queen Kausalyā alone as “the mother of a hero.”
Śatrughnasyānvavekṣayā indicates that Sumitrā-devī might desire to see Śatrughna and His relatives.
