Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 90: Bharata Meets Bharadvāja Ṛṣi
Text 2.90.21

जाने चैतन्मनःस्थं ते दृढीकरणमस्त्विति।
अपृच्छं त्वां तथात्यर्थं कीर्तिं समभिवर्धयन्॥

jāne caitan manaḥsthaṁ te dṛḍhī-karaṇam astv iti
apṛcchaṁ tvāṁ tathātyarthaṁ kīrtiṁ samabhivardhayan

jāne = I knew; ca = and; etat manaḥstham = what was in mind; te = Your; dṛḍhī-karaṇam = reinforced; astu iti = it can be; apṛccham = I asked about it; tvām = You; tathā = so that; ati-artham = greatly; kīrtim = Your fame as Rāma’s good brother; samabhivardhayan = while increasing.

And I knew what was in Your mind. I asked You about it so that it can be reinforced while greatly increasing Your fame as Rāma’s good brother.

Bharadvāja knew [what was in Bharata’s mind] through his yogic prowess. [Still, he asked Bharata] according to the logic of sthūṇā-nikhanana or fixing a post more deeply into the soil.1

1 That is, reinforcing a good argument.
