Chapter 90: Bharata Meets Bharadvāja Ṛṣi
Text 2.90.20
त्वय्येतत्पुरुषव्याघ्र युक्तं राघववंशजे।
गुरुवृत्तिर्दमश्चैव साधूनां चानुयायिता॥
tvayy etat puruṣa-vyāghra yuktaṁ rāghava-vaṁśaje
guru-vṛttir damaś caiva sādhūnāṁ cānuyāyitā
tvayi = in You; etat = all of these are; puruṣa-vyāghra = O prince; yuktam = appropriately found; rāghava-vaṁśaje = who are born in the dynasty of Raghu; guru-vṛttiḥ = service to one’s superiors; damaḥ ca eva = sense control; sādhūnām = to saintly persons; ca = and; anuyāyitā = obedience.
O prince, service to one’s superiors, sense control and obedience to saintly persons—all of these are appropriately found in You who are born in the dynasty of Raghu.
“Sense control” here indicates that Bharata was not greedy for the kingdom. Bharata was obedient to saintly persons, that is, He fulfilled their desires.
NOTE. Prabhupāda writes about the importance of sense control for anyone seeking freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth thus:
Unless the senses are controlled, there is no chance of elevation to the platform of knowledge, and without knowledge and devotion there is no chance of liberation. (Bhagavad-gītā 2.6 purport)
