Chapter 91: Bharadvāja’s Hospitality to Bharata, His Army and Family
Text 2.91.22
एवं समाधिना युक्तस्तेजसाप्रतिमेन च।
शीक्षास्वरसमायुक्तं तपसा चाब्रवीन्मुनिः॥
evaṁ samādhinā yuktas tejasāpratimena ca
śīkṣā-svara-samāyuktaṁ tapasā cābravīn muniḥ
evam samādhinā = with meditative trance; yuktaḥ = endowed; tejasā = prowess; apratimena ca = incomparable; śīkṣā-svara-samāyuktam = in accents conforming the Śikṣā; tapasā ca = and austerity; abravīt = uttered; muniḥ = the sage.
The sage, endowed with meditative trance, incomparable prowess and austerity, uttered these mantras in accents conforming to Śikṣā.
The author then points out that Bharadvāja Ṛṣi had the special powers to [effectively] call [those celestial beings].
Sage Bharadvāja was endowed with austerity, that is, he had accepted bodily discomfort such as fasting and [was gifted with] realized knowledge. Therefore, he had prowess, that is, the capacity to punish the celestial beings if they didn’t come [when he called them].
Śikṣā [is the Vedāṅga that] teaches about the Sanskrit letters, accents and so on. Chanting the Vedic mantras with incorrect accents is harmful to the chanter 1.
Sage Bharadvāja recited the mantras in texts 12 to 21.
