Chapter 91: Bharadvāja’s Hospitality to Bharata, His Army and Family
Text 2.91.74-79

शुक्लानंशुमतश्चापि दन्तधावनसञ्चयान्।
शुक्लांश्चन्दनकल्कांश्च समुद्गेष्ववतिष्ठतः॥

दर्पणान्परिमृष्टांश्च वाससां चापि सञ्चयान्।
पादुकोपानहां चैव युग्मानि च सहस्रशः॥

आञ्जनीः कङ्कतान्कूर्चाञ्शस्त्राणि च धनूंषि च।
मर्मत्राणानि चित्राणि शयनान्यासनानि च॥

प्रतिपानह्रदान्पूर्णान्खरोष्ट्रगजवाजिनाम्।
अवगाह्यसुतीर्थांश्च ह्रदान्सोत्पलपुष्करान्।।

आकाशवर्णप्रतिमान्स्वच्छतोयान्सुखप्लवान्।
नीलवैडूर्यवर्णांश्च मृदून्यवससञ्चयान्॥

निर्वापार्थान्पशूनां ते ददृशुस्तत्र सर्वशः॥

śuklān aṁśumataś cāpi danta-dhāvana-sañcayān
śuklāṁś candana-kalkāṁś ca samudgeṣv avatiṣṭhataḥ

darpaṇān parimṛṣṭāṁś ca vāsasāṁ cāpi sañcayān
pādukopānahāṁ caiva yugmāni ca sahasraśaḥ

āñjanīḥ kaṅkatān kūrcāñ śastrāṇi ca dhanūṁṣi ca
marma-trāṇāni citrāṇi śayanāny āsanāni ca

pratipāna-hradān pūrṇān kharoṣṭra-gaja-vājinām
avagāhya-sutīrthāṁś ca hradān sotpala-puṣkarān

ākāśa-varṇa-pratimān svaccha-toyān sukha-plavān
nīla-vaiḍūrya-varṇāṁś ca mṛdūn yavasa-sañcayān

nirvāpārthān paśūnāṁ te dadṛśus tatra sarvaśaḥ

śuklān = spotless; aṁśumataḥ ca api danta-dhāvana-sañcayān = stacks of toothbrushing twigs; śuklān = white; candana-kalkān ca = sandal powder; samudgeṣu = on caskets 12; avatiṣṭhataḥ = placed; darpaṇān = mirrors; parimṛṣṭān ca = clean; vāsasām ca api = clothes; sañcayān = collection of; pādukā-upānahām ca eva = shoes made from wood and skin; yugmāni ca = pairs of; sahasraśaḥ = thousands of; āñjanīḥ = baskets containing collyrium; kaṅkatān = combs 13; kūrcān = brushes for cleaning mustaches; śastrāṇi ca = decorative weapons for warriors; dhanūṁṣi ca = bows; marma-trāṇāni = armors; citrāṇi = varieties of; śayanāni = couches; āsanāni ca = seats; pratipāna-hradān = ponds of drinking [water]; pūrṇān = fully filled; khara-uṣṭra-gaja-vājinām = for donkeys, camels, elephants and horses; avagāhya-sutīrthān = with beautifully constructed ghats to facilitated bathing; ca = and; hradān = ponds; sa-utpala-puṣkarān = with utpala and puṣkara lotuses; ākāśa-varṇa-pratimān = resembling the complexion of the clear sky; svaccha-toyān = lakes of transparent water; sukha-plavān = and comfortable for bathing; nīla-vaiḍūrya-varṇān ca = as green as sapphire; mṛdūn = soft; yavasa-sañcayān = heaps of grass 14; nirvāpa-arthān paśūnām = for the animals; te = the soldiers; dadṛśuḥ = saw; tatra = there; sarvaśaḥ = all.

All the soldiers there saw spotless stacks of toothbrushing twigs, white sandal powder placed on caskets, clean mirrors, collections of clothes, thousands of pairs of shoes made from wood and skin, baskets containing collyrium, combs, brushes for cleaning mustaches, decorative weapons for warriors, bows, varieties of armors, couches, seats, ponds of drinking [water] fully filled for donkeys, camels, elephants and horses, and ponds with utpala and puṣkara lotuses with beautifully constructed ghats to facilitated bathing, lakes of transparent water resembling the complexion of the clear sky and comfortable for bathing, heaps of soft grass as green as sapphire for the animals.

The white sandal powder were for decoration after bath. Kūrcān also indicates that there were seats for bathing and so on. Pratipāna-hradān indicates that there were ponds of drinking [water] to digest what has been eaten.

GLOSS. [Lakes of transparent waters] resembled the complexion of the clear sky, that is, they were blue.1
