gaja-vāji-rathākīrṇāṁ vāhinīṁ vāhinī-pate
vāhayasva mahā-bhāga tato drakṣyasi rāghavam
dakṣiṇena eva mārgeṇa = by the southern route; savya-dakṣiṇam eva = then by the southwestern route; ca = and; gaja-vāji-ratha-ākīrṇām = crowded with elephants, horses and chariots; vāhinīm = Your army; vāhinī-pate = master of the army; vāhayasva = if You lead; mahā-bhāga = O greatly opulent; tataḥ drakṣyasi = You will see; rāghavam = that descendant of Raghu.
O greatly opulent master of the army, if You lead Your army crowded with elephants, horses and chariots by the southern route and then by the southwestern route, You will see that descendant of Raghu.
First Bharata and His retinue should go by the southern route from Bharadvāja’s āśrama for a distance until it splits into branches. Then they should go by the southwestern branch.
Some [commentators] add that Bharadvāja wanted Bharata to lead His army through empty lands as much as possible [even if they had to go by a longer route] in the left or right because the forest pathways were [too] narrow [for the army to pass through].
