ete mṛga-gaṇā bhānti śīghra-vegāḥ pracoditāḥ
vāyu-praviddhā śaradi megha-rājir ivāmbare

ete = they; mṛga-gaṇāḥ = herds of deer; bhānti = appear; śīghra-vegāḥ = are running away quickly; pracoditāḥ = excited by the soldiers; vāyu-praviddhā = pushed by the winds; śaradi = during autumn; megha-rājiḥ = clouds; iva = like; ambare = in the sky.

Herds of deer excited by the soldiers are running away quickly. They appear like clouds pushed by the winds in the sky during autumn.

GLOSS. Herds of deer were excited by the soldiers, that is, terrified [upon seeing them].
